Visitax is a mandatory tourist tax, that must be paid by all international travelers who visit the State of Quintana Roo, (Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum). This is not the same as a visa to enter tourism tax mexico. Visitax is valid for the ENTIRE period of your stay in Quintana Roo and is single-paid. This new system allows the visitor to pay the fee online, in less than 5 minutes; once you complete your payment you will receive a QR code which you must show at airport security upon your departure.

Demystifying Mexico’s Tourism Tax: What Travelers Need to Know

The State of Quintana Roo is part of the Yucatan Peninsula and has many popular travel destinations including Cancun, Riviera Maya, Cozumel and Tulum. The new tourism tax is mandatory for all travelers over the age of four and comes into effect April 1st, 2021. However, despite being mandatory the tax has been hard to find information about and, as a result, many travelers have traveled to and from Cancun without ever being asked for proof of their payment, which has led to some to ignore the requirement entirely.

This has led to a proliferation of websites offering to pay the tourism tax on behalf of visitors, for a fee. While it is not the responsibility of these websites to ensure that their customers are paying the correct amount, they do take advantage of people who are unaware of the requirements and do not know what to look out for. The websites are not verified, regulated or connected to the State of Quintana Roo and we strongly advise against using them.
